Overview

The Director of Patient Care Services provides leadership to assigned departments and assures department alignment in achieving organizational expectations/goals related to the 5 Keys of Excellence (patients, employees/volunteers, physicians and clinical excellence) and fiscal responsibility.  The primary role of the Director of Patient Care Services is to achieve the organizational expectations as strategic planner and developer, communicator, facilitator and translator. 

The Director of Patient Care Services works in conjunction with other leaders to assure that employees have the human and fiscal resources to provide quality care to those we serve while being excellent stewards of our resources.

Responsibilities

 

  1. Demonstrates the provision of the Mission and Vision of DCH Health System by providing leadership and Innovation within areas of responsibility.
  2. Develops, administers and evaluates strategies and goals for Patient Care Services that are aligned with the Mission, Vision and System-wide Goals of DCH Health Care and 5 Keys to Excellence.
  3. Assures meeting/exceeding of DCH Mission and Vision, departmental goals and 5 keys of excellence.
  4. In conjunction with the CNO sets direction in areas of responsibility with defined measures and provides the framework for staff to meet their goals.
  5. Provides strategic leadership for department(s) including but not limited to long range planning and overall direction setting at the departmental/unit level.
  6. Responsible for department organizational structure and alignment to meet forecasted business, community and patient needs.
  7. Ensures clinical excellence across areas of responsibility as evidenced by outcomes such as HCAHPS, quality, and value based purchasing scores, NDNQI measures, system and departmental goals.
  8. Establishes priorities for patient experience, division growth, enhancement, and quality service based on customer need, community need, research findings and industry trends.
  9. Collaborates with all internal and external customer groups in order to develop and implement services and processes to meet needs and exceed expectations.
  10. Collaborates with other leaders to integrate overlapping patient care opportunities.
  11. Utilizes benchmark data from internal and external customer sources to identify opportunities for improvement of care and patient safety.
  12. Develop and coordinate quality indicators, including the establishment of benchmarks, seeking to obtain top percentile ranking and the creation of a best in class environment.
  13. Prepares, administers, manages and oversees operating and capital budgets for areas of responsibility.                
  14. Collaborates with team members (physicians, employees, administrators, leadership) in order to maximize revenue and decrease expense.  
  15. Meets or exceeds departmental productivity standards.
  16. Approves payroll and is responsible for accurate payment of employees, including other management positions
  17. Interviews, selects, hire, and retains employees, including other management positions.
  18. Ensures orientation and training for employees, including other management positions.
  19. Manages performance, including other management positions.
  20. Promotes, demotes, or transfers employees to meet organizational needs, including other management  positions. Executes recognition activities for high performers.  Executes progressive discipline up to and including termination.
  21. Promotes professional growth, development and accountability in staff, students and colleagues.
  22. Oversees and accountable for staffing and turnover in area of responsibility.
  23. Develops and supports professional governance in all areas of responsibility.
  24. Develops and support LEAN methodology for performance improvement in all areas.
  25. Hardwires accountability and expectations (including back to the basics) throughout the areas of responsibility. Sets performance standards for staff. Develops working environment and avenues for education and training to meet those standards.
  26. Responsible for development, implementation and interpretation of departmental policies within a major organizational/functional area or the development and review of system policies within a recognized discipline
  27. Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  28. Performs all duties according to policy and procedure.
  29. Hardwires accountability and expectations throughout areas of responsibility.
  30. Provides timely updates to the CNO/VP Patient Care Services and/or Assistant VP of Patient Care Services
  31. Achieves continuous systematic, measurable improvement in areas of responsibility.
  32. Leads and participates in organizational change.
  33. Achieves federal, state, local and third party regulatory requirements continuously.
  34. Inspires pride in the organization and takes corrective action when organizational values are compromised.
  35. Implements communication mechanism within areas of responsibility whereby, employees, physicians, patients and families feel they are listened to, understood and understand messages sent.
  36. Treats people fairly and with respect.

  38. Provides performance feedback on a regular basis.

  40. Provides resources and systems for employees to perform.
  41. Assist with the establishment of patient care mechanisms for review and evaluation of care rendered.
  42. Identifies best practice in care and creates, implements actions plans to recognize and execute best practices.

  45. In conjunction with the CNO ensures nursing care objectives, policies and practice are established consistent with nursing ethics and standards of care.
  46. Collaborates with physicians in establishing and maintaining nurse/physicians relationships.
  47. Must be able to apply knowledge of transitions of care and population health to acute care environment as evidenced by the creation and implementation of processes that improve quality of care, improve the patient experience, decrease 30 day readmissions and decrease LOS.
  48. Manages departmental budget.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with current Alabama License.
  • Anyone hired after September 30, 2016 must have a BSN and Master's degree in Nursing or Health Related Field or must be enrolled in a Nursing or Health Related Master’s level program to be completed within 2 years. 
  • 5-7 years progressive experience in a leadership role in a hospital setting.
  • Must possess highly developed interpersonal skills to work with a variety of people including employees, physicians, board members, local, state and federal officials and hospital administrators. 
  • Requires financial knowledge relevant to health care and financial analysis including the budget process. 
  • Requires skills in compliance, planning, organizing, and managing multiple projects/tasks. 
  • Must have knowledge of industry standards including regulatory standards.
  • Must be versed in organizational management, performance improvement and change management. 
  • Must possess knowledge related to transitions of care and population health. 
  • Must be able to operationalize strategies and plans and have the ability to partner with department managers and leaders to coordinate standardized care for the patient population.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication in both written and oral skills. 
  • Must possess excellent team building and relationship building skills. 
  • Must be skilled in issues of diversity and cultural competence with particular ability to adapt to the needs of a diverse work-force. 
  • Demonstrates analytical, problem solving and decision making skills. 
  • Requires exceptional customer service skills and ability to work as a member of a cohesive team.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak and comprehend English.
