Overview

Provide professional clinical care for patients undergoing evaluation and treatment at West Alabama Urology Associates clinic including assisting providers in the completion of in-office medical procedures.    

Coordinates overall clinical operations and workflow including assuring that appropriate clinical policies and procedures are in place and followed.  Work within scope of practice allowable by licensing and/or certification board.

Responsibilities

  1. Assesses condition of clinic patients, which may include, but not limited to the patient’s physical condition, psychological status, social status, spiritual, pain assessment, and other needs.
  2. Directly assists physicians with in-office medical procedures including cystoscopies, vasectomies, catheter placements, ultrasounds, biopsies, and other procedures.  Requires knowledge and skill with sterile field, medical devices and surgical equipment.
  3. Prepare exam rooms with necessary equipment and supplies including set-up of sterile trays. 
  4. Responsible for the appropriate sterilization of reusable medical equipment in accordance to policy, procedure and device requirements.
  5. Administer medications, injections, and treatments as directed by physicians and/or nurse practitioner according to scope of approved clinical practices.
  6. Instruct patient in collection of samples, testing, procedures, and follow up care.
  7. Educates patient and/or family regarding procedures, medications, and follow-up care.
  8. Communicate with referring offices or hospital units regarding transition of care.
  9. Obtain necessary pre-certification and/or referrals for certain medications and treatments.
  10. Assist providers with care and follow up of all patients in office as assigned.
  11. Schedule appointments, procedures, and test as directed by providers
  12. Screen and respond to triage calls and ensure follow-up as necessary.
  13. Clean and stock rooms as scheduled; assists with inventory supply management
  14. Assist with management of the clinical support staff including developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment for staff and patients
  15. Documents all patient care assessments, evaluations, activities and/or observations according to policies and procedures.
  16. Observes and practices DCH policy concerning patient confidentiality including on-line information and the Medical Record on file.

  • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. RN requirements: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree from RN program with current Alabama licensure in good standing from the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  2. Prior experience in Urology care or surgical nursing preferred
  3. Requirements for all: Ability to operate basic office equipment.  Excellent verbal communication skills to interact with patients, coworkers and other visitors.  Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Requires manual dexterity.  Position is in a clinic setting requiring mostly standing, reaching, bending, and stooping during the course of each day.  Occasionally requires lifting up to 50 pounds and ability to push stretcher/wheelchair with average adult patient.  May require use of footstool to reach top shelves.  The position includes exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, lab chemicals and hazard material.  The position requires wearing common protective or safety equipment. The position requires good communication skills, involves contact either face to face, by email or over the phone with co-workers, physicians, and patients.  

 

Physical presence onsite of essential.  Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.  Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
