Overview

The Release of Information Specialist ensures that only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information.  Ensures authenticity of patient signature prior to release of information.   Responsible for ensuring that all releases of information are incompliance with the request and authorization, in accordance with established policies, procedures and HIPAA statues.  Applies detailed provision of laws and regulations. Requires skills that include a thorough working knowledge for the retrieval of documents from various systems including Expanse, Chartmaxx, microfiche and paper charts.

Responsibilities

  1. Prioritizes and processes ROI requests applying the detailed provisions of specific laws and regulations for release of information and ensuring authenticity of patient signature and legal right to request medical information.
  2. Runs appropriate Expanse reports as related to release of information.
  3. Requires skills that include a thorough working knowledge of the Expanse and Chartmaxx Systems, microfilm, and paper charts as to process requests for release of information.
  4. Retrieves and Prepares documents for release of information by selecting the appropriate documents from the medical record and preparing them for copying and/or faxing.
  5. Generates invoices, letters, and release of information acknowledgements through Expanse. Assists with posting the revenue and accountability for reimbursement.
  6. Responds to requests for medical information from insurances, attorneys, subpoenas, court orders, Risk Management, and legal counsel.
  7. Answers phones, retrieve messages and communicates to appropriate persons or processes requests as related to continued health care and release of information.
  8. Performs Midas chart audits and analysis of clinical records as needed

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

 

Must have good communication and organizational skills.   High School diploma or equivalent required. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak and comprehend English.
