Overview

By building and leading a strong team, provides continuous improvement of utilities, buildings, facility equipment, and grounds.  Optimizes the environment of care within budget

Responsibilities

  1. Manage day to day maintenance operations by using sound organizational, prioritization, and technical skills
  2. Maintains daily shop operations by working directly with mechanics throughout the organization to resolve equipment issues, make best value decisions, and improve processes
  3. Directs, coordinates, and supervises all mechanics on team
  4. Effective communication with Customer, team, and manager
  5. Continuous development of staff, through hands on examples, and by serving as a knowledge base
  6. Continuous improvement of team efficiency and effectiveness
  7. Provision of safe and reliable buildings, facility equipment, utilities, and grounds
  8. Responsible for making sure health/safety issues are completed immediately or As Soon as Possible
  9. Provides and effectively presents good information for training, problem solving, and decision making
  10. Helps to manage inter-team relations between Engineering Services’ teams, between Engineering and Construction, and between Engineering Services and other DCH departments
  11. Assume duties of Director/Manager during his/her absence
  12. Manages front line operations of area of accountability related to meeting/exceeding departmental goals, 5 keys of excellence, DCH Mission and Vision.
  13. Interviews, selects, hire and retains employees
  14. Executes progressive discipline up to and including termination

Qualifications

  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English. 
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required. 
  • Must possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License
  • Must demonstrate facility competence through a cognitive CBT test and specific tasks observation
  • Must have good organizational, technical, and communications skills

PLUS:

  • Two year technical degree directly applicable to primary assignment;
  • AND ten years’ experience in primary assignment
  • OR ten years’ experience relevant to primary assignment area or with Engineering Services at a DCH Facility

PHYSICAL FACTORS

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Heavy Work

Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects

  • Able to climb ladders and scaffolding
  • Possess good manual dexterity
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Requires wearing common personal protective equipment
  • Possible daily exposure hazardous chemicals
  • Vision and hearing to be corrected to within a normal range
  • Includes exposure to extremely high decibel levels. (Loud noise)
  • Often exposed to hot and cold temperatures due to outdoor exposure and weather conditions
  • Possible exposure to cuts, burns, bites or stings
  • Must be able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

STRUCTURAL

  • Must be able to work 40 hours a week, occasional weekend and overtime when required
  • Some travel may be required
  • Requires attention to detail
