Overview

Student in a fifteen (15) month course of study to become proficient and capable of performing diagnostic ultrasound exams as ordered under the supervision of a radiologist. They must have the specific expertise and skills necessary for maintaining a safe sonography environment daily. The student sonographer knows basic anatomy, physiology and physics as it pertains to patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provides imaging services through knowledge of PACS system to patients of all ages including maternal, neonate and infants, pediatrics, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
  • Performs ultrasound studies; abdominal, retroperitoneal, OB/GYN, small parts, neonatal, vascular and endocavity after having completed and passed off exams.
  • Correlates clinical history with the exam(s) being performed.
  • Understands, utilizes and takes responsibility for the care, cleaning and maintenance of all imaging, transport and office supplies, equipment and software as required by assigned area. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of human structure, function and pathology.
  • Anticipates and provides basic patient care and comfort as well as utilize universal precautions.
  • Upholds all safety standards related to assigned position. Follows the established protocols, practices and guidelines for assigned area of expertise to provide quality service. Observes JCAHO standards.
  • Prioritizes customer and patient satisfaction and utilizes AIDET principles. Works with other departments, modalities and personnel to provide above average care to patients and families.
  • Uses I Care principles to ensure proper patient identification, correct exam, and to improve patient communication and engagement.
  • Practices good stewardship with supplies, equipment and department resources to assist in maintaining the financial viability of the DCH Health System.
  • Able to properly escort patients into exam room by transport essential to that patient; to aid the patient onto and off the exam table; and assist the patient while on the table, i.e. turning, etc.
  • Able to report malfunctions of equipment to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skills of quality improvement.
  • Able to recognize emergency patient conditions and initiate first aid and basic life support procedures.
  • Able to send studies, notes, etc. through the use of PACS.

 

DCH Standards:

  • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Fulfills education requirements for assigned position including DCH Health System and Imaging required CBT’s, in-services, meetings and educational sessions. 
  • Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
  • Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet. Responds timely to all forms of communication
  • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be registered and/or certified in a two (2) year allied health, patient care related program.
  • Must be efficient in the use of imaging equipment in the area of expertise, office equipment and related material essential to good patient care, imaging exams and Synapse.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
