Overview

The Trauma Service Advanced Care Practitioner (CRNP or PA) in collaborative practice with physician(s) provides direct health care services to both trauma and general surgery patients at DCH Regional Medical Center and West Alabama Trauma Services clinic.  Services provided both in inpatient and outpatient setting. 

Responsibilities

  1. Provides assessment and diagnostic services including diagnosis and treatment of patient illness, performing H&P’s and ordering diagnostic test as indicated, providing follow-up care, seeing patients in the hospital as needed and on call duties as needed.
  2. Rounds on hospital patients daily as assigned and determines treatment plan(s) in collaboration with the supervising physician.
  3. Performs/assists with a wide range of medical and surgical procedures under physician’s supervision and accordance with scope of practice collaborative agreement. These may include, but not limited to, insertion of central venous lines, removal of chest tubes, and placement of catheters.   
  4. Responds to daily telephone requests from patients, inpatient nursing units, and other physician offices. 
  5. Writes appropriate prescriptions and administers medications in accordance ABN Scope of Practice and the collaborating agreement and treatment protocol established by the supervising physician. 
  6. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests and examinations. 
  7. When indicated, coordinates referral of patients to different levels of care.
  8. Responds to Trauma Codes and consults.
  9. Documents all patient encounters, records observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner in the patient’s medical record.
  10. Responsible for taking occasional night and weekend call coverage within practice.
  11.  Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of trauma practice management guidelines.
  12. Participates in Trauma Performance Improvement Program and Quality Initiatives.
  13. Opportunity to function as Second or First Assistant in operating room as necessary.
  14. Supports adherence to regulatory guidelines ascribed by State and Federal regulators.

Qualifications

  1. Must be a graduate of an approved Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  2. Current Certified AL Registered Nurse Practitioner Licensure in good standing with Alabama Board of Nursing, or current licensure by the State of AL Board of Medical Examiners as a Physician Assistant
  3. Must currently maintain, or be eligible for, DEA registration.
  4. Minimum of two (2) years with trauma/critical care population preferred.
  5. Must meet criteria to obtain Critical Care Specialty Protocol
  6. Excellent verbal communication skills to interact with patients, coworkers and other visitors.
  7. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

  

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Ability to use medical supplies and equipment necessary to carry out the duties listed above.

Work is in a fast paced acute and ambulatory setting requires travel between the acute care hospital and the ambulatory clinics.  Must have the ability to take occasional night and weekend call.  Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, pushing, and pulling.  Must be able to lift and support weight of 75 pounds in handling patients and medical equipment and supplies.  Must speak English fluently and in understandable terms.  Must possess an intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, touching and finger dexterity.  Must be able to respond quickly to changes in patient and/or clinic conditions.  Possible exposure to communicable diseases.

Will limit access to protected health information (PHI) to the information reasonably necessary to do the job.  Will share information only on a need to know basis for work purposes.  Access to verbal, written and electronic PHI for this job has been determined based on job level and job responsibility within the organization.  Computerized access to PHI for this job has been determined as described above and is controlled via user ID and password.

Physical presence onsite is essential.  Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.  Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation
