Overview

Under general direction of the Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nurse, incumbent is responsible for managing the operations of the Office of the Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nurse.  In addition, she/he has accountability for the management of discrete, specified programs and projects; designing, implementing and evaluating management systems to enhance operations and assisting with the development and implementation of short and long-term strategies.

 

Responsible for planning, coordinating and monitoring the Division of Patient Care Services annual budgets and the Division Performance Improvement initiatives.  Provides administrative support and direction for the Office of the Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nurse.

Responsibilities

  1. Analyzes proposals brought forth to the CNO, making recommendations and plans of action.
  2. Plans and coordinates annual budgeting process with Finance Department and with Patient Care Services Division Directors and Managers.
  3. Monitors annual budget compliance for Patient Care Services Administration and for the Patient Care Services Division.
  4. Evaluates current departmental and hospital systems, focusing on trends in health care and continuous quality improvement initiatives; develops proposals for change including recommendations and plans of action.
  5. Responsible for the areas of Nursing Resource Management including: Nursing float pool, Staffing, Patient Accommodations, Escort, DACU and the Administrative Supervisors.
  6. Assists the CNO with the development and implementation of short and long-term strategies, policies, procedures, practices and programs.
  7. Coordinates initiatives and monitors Division Performance Improvement activity, patient flow and length of stay (LOS) activities.
  8. Manages programs and/or projects to enhance department operations and plans, implements and evaluates its effectiveness. Participates in the design, implementation and evaluation of defined programs to promote attainment of department/service goals.  Identifies and recommends fiscal, material and human resource requirements for specific initiatives.

  11. Prepares written reports and/or proposals for the CNO. Facilitates the preparation of materials, by Patient Care Services' leadership and staff, for presentation to the Vice President for Patient Care.
  12. Represents the CNO on committees, special task forces, project teams as designated; assumes operational responsibility for specific projects and/or activities as designated.
  13. Assumes responsibility for own professional development; identifies learning needs and goals, and designs a plan to meet them.
  14. Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.

Qualifications

Registered Nurse with current Alabama/Compact License.

BSN Required (may give consideration to candidates with relevant years of leadership experience with BSN completed within 2 years)

Master's degree in Health Related Field or must complete Health Related Master’s level program within 2 -4 years. May give consideration to candidates with greater than 20 plus years of relevant job experience in similar role.

Minimum 4 years progressive experience in a leadership role in a hospital setting.

Must possess highly developed interpersonal skills to work with a variety of people including employees, physicians, board members, local, state and federal officials and hospital administrators.

Requires financial knowledge relevant to health care and financial analysis including the budget process.

Requires skills in compliance, planning, organizing, and managing multiple projects/tasks. 

Must possess excellent interpersonal communication in both written and oral skills

Demonstrates analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills. 

American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) required; ACLS preferred

Must be able to read, write legibly, speak and comprehend English.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical:  Ability to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking.  Ability to reach reasonable distance in any direction. Physical presence onsite is essential.  Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to                          within normal range.  Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Environmental:  Includes exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, lab chemicals and hazard materials and/or cleaning solutions. Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment. Requires use of electronic mail, time and  attendance software, learning management software and intranet.

Psychological: Includes demonstrating leadership skills, delegating to team members, addressing conflict, communicating with all types of personalities, and being responsible for outcomes/results.
