Overview

The System Director is responsible for managing the operations of Patient Care Services across the DCH Health System to include Regional, Northport, and Fayette campuses.  In addition, Director has accountability for the management of select, specified programs and projects; designing, implementing and evaluating data and analytics to enhance operations and assisting with the development and implementation of short and long-term strategies. Responsible for operational data review, analysis, and report development.

 

Responsible for planning, coordinating, monitoring and providing support to the Division of Patient Care Services productivity and annual budgets.  The System Director of Nursing Operations works collaboratively with other leaders across the system to assure that employees have the human and fiscal resources to provide quality care to those we serve while being excellent stewards of our resources.

Responsibilities

  1. Analyzes recommendations/ proposals brought forth by and to the CNO, making recommendations and plans of action.
  2. Reviews and develops data analytic reports concerning core and contingent workforce labor.
  3. Works collaboratively with Human Resource partners to support and manage 3rd party staffing and scheduling platform.
  4. Collaborates with nursing and HR to develop and review incentive strategies and goals. Monitors for success and financial sustainability.
  5. Plans and coordinates annual budgeting process with Finance Department and Nursing Division.
  6. Monitors budget and productivity compliance across Nursing Services.
  7. Evaluates current departmental and hospital systems, focusing on trends in health care and continuous quality improvement initiatives; develops proposals for change including recommendations and plans of action.
  8. Responsible for the areas of Nursing Resource Management including: Nursing float pool, Staffing, Patient Accommodations, Escort, DACU.
  9. Assists the CNO with the development and implementation of short and long-term strategies, policies, procedures, practices and programs to support nursing recruitment and retention initiatives with financial prudence.
  10. Continually reviews and evaluates staffing levels, ratios, and deployment to ensure appropriate distribution of workforce for safe patient care.
  11. Manages programs and/or projects to enhance department operations and plans, implements and evaluates its effectiveness. Participates in the design, implementation and evaluation of defined programs to promote attainment of department/service goals.  Identifies and recommends fiscal, material and human resource requirements for specific initiatives.
  12. Oversees Nursing Operations strategic and operating Plan
  13. Prepares written reports and/or proposals for the CNO. Facilitates the preparation of materials, by Patient Care Services' leadership and staff, for presentation to the Vice President for Patient Care.
  14. Represents the CNO on committees, special task forces, project teams as designated; assumes operational responsibility for specific projects and/or activities as designated.
  15. Assumes responsibility for own professional development; identifies learning needs and goals, and designs a plan to meet them.
  16. Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  17. Responsible for managing contingent labor volumes and activity. Responsible for tracking and management of all internal staffing initiatives and incentives. Makes appropriate recommendations for programmatic modifications and termination.
  18. Performs routine data analysis and reconciliation on contingent and incentive labor spend, and makes fiscally sound recommendations for managing labor resources.
  19. Develops and submits weekly or monthly nursing analysis reports for review, monitoring and/or action planning.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with current Alabama/Compact License.
  • BSN Required (may give consideration to candidates with relevant years of leadership experience with BSN completed within 2 years)
  • Master's degree in Health Related Field or must complete Health Related Master’s level program within 2 -4 years. May give consideration to candidates with greater than 20 plus years of relevant job experience in similar role.
  • Minimum 4 years progressive experience in a leadership role in a hospital setting.
  • Must possess highly developed interpersonal skills to work with a variety of people including employees, physicians, board members, local, state and federal officials and hospital administrators.
  • Requires financial knowledge relevant to health care and financial analysis including the budget process.
  • Requires skills in compliance, planning, organizing, and managing multiple projects/tasks. 
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication in both written and oral skills
  • Demonstrates analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills. 
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) required; ACLS preferred
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak and comprehend English.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical:  Ability to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking.  Ability to reach reasonable distance in any direction. Physical presence onsite is essential.  Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to                          within normal range.  Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Environmental:  Includes exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, lab chemicals and hazard materials and/or cleaning solutions. Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment. Requires use of electronic mail, time and  attendance software, learning management software and intranet.

Psychological: Includes demonstrating leadership skills, delegating to team members, addressing conflict, communicating with all types of personalities, and being responsible for outcomes/results.
