Overview

The outpatient pharmacy technician assists pharmacists in providing medication to inpatients and outpatients of all ages and helps the pharmacist in any routine duties not requiring professional judgment in our outpatient pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  1. In accordance with state and federal regulations, assists the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in the practice of pharmacy. Assists the pharmacist in the performance of other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with policies and procedures.
  2. Provides patient with excellent customer service by being greeting them and offering assistance to have a positive experience. Escalates concerns to the pharmacist if needed.
  3. Performs duties as assigned by Pharmacy Manager or other Pharmacist including utilizing pharmacy systems to enter patient and drug information, ensuring information is entered correctly, filling prescriptions by retrieving, counting and pouring pharmaceutical drugs, verifying medicine is correct, and checking for possible interactions. Assists pharmacists in scheduling and maintaining work flow.
  4. Responsible and accountable for registering all related sales on assigned cash register, collects and handles cash as required. Assists in locating products. Handles telephone calls that do not require personal attention of the pharmacist, including those to physicians. Processes (corrects and resubmits) manual claims for third party program prescription services in a timely and efficient manner, and performs other clerical duties, as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager.
  5. Assists and supports Pharmacy Department on inventory management activities, such as, ordering, unpacking, checking and storing shipment of pharmaceuticals. Maintains knowledge of compliance requirements, and processes invoices, notifies pharmacist of shortages
  6. May participate in Med to Bed program to assist patients discharging from the hospital to acquire medications which requires meeting and speaking with patients.
  7. Reports, immediately, prescription errors to pharmacist on duty and adheres to Company policies and procedures in relation to pharmacy errors and the Quality Improvement Program.

    2. Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
    3. Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, co-workers, colleagues and with self.
    4. Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet.
    5. Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
    6. All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

 

Must be a high school graduate or have the equivalent.

Must be registered as a technician in State of Alabama by start date.   Must become pharmacy technician certified within 6 months from job start date of the job through pharmacy technician certification board.

Must be able to operate a computer, calculator and a telephone, transfer carts and other related pharmacy equipment. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Able to stand, walk, reach, sit, crouch and stoop for extended periods of time.  Must be able to carry objects weighing 35 pounds.  Requires good motor coordination with good manual and finger dexterity.  Must have the ability to communicate with staff and patients of all ages.  Physical presence onsite is essential.  Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.  Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
