Overview

The house Supervisor is responsible for supervision and coordination of activities within the facility in the absence of the Unit/Department Managers, during assigned hours.  She/he allocates hospital nursing resources appropriately in order to meet patient care needs by reassigning staff as necessary while supporting goals and objectives of the individual units, providing supervision and management of nursing staff for assigned shift. Maintains close communication with Unit/Department Managers and Administrative Person on call as necessary.

Responsibilities

 

  1. Allocates nursing resources efficiently and appropriately in order to meet patient care needs and resource allocation guidelines. 
  2. Maintains central staffing records and daily staffing sheets for hospital nursing units.
  3. Reassigns staff, calls in additional staff or cancels staff as appropriate.
  4. Maintains accurate documentation of all staffing changes.
  5. Uses the nursing process to direct and provide all levels of nursing care.
  6. Serves as the facility-wide contact for after-hours retrieval of supplies.
  7. Follows and assists with revision and implementation of policies and procedures and serves as a clinical resource to staff and to Nursing Department Leaders in assuring that practice is consistent with policies.
  8. Completes annual performance evaluations of nursing staff on assigned shift.
  9. Assists in performance improvement (PI) activities by identifying quality issues, serving on PI teams as warranted, assisting with PI measures and supporting and implementing changes necessary for improvement.                        
  10. Supports management decisions and organizational goals by being accountable as an individual and by holding staff accountable during hours assigned.
  11. Maintains close communication with Unit/Department Managers and/or Inpatient Director in all matters related to personnel. 
  12. Takes appropriate corrective action when necessary and maintains accurate documentation of such action.
  13. Follows up on patient/customer complaints and effectively resolves issues following Team Works principles and behavioral standards. Maintains accurate documentation of such events and notifies Department Managers and/or Administrative person on-call as appropriate.
  14. Serves as the initial contact person within the facility for Emergency Codes including severe weather alerts, disaster codes, and medical emergencies. 
  15. Notifies law enforcement and other agencies as appropriate.
  16. Maintains accurate records including complete Quality Assurance reports.
  17. Responds to Code Blues and other emergency codes within the facility.
  18. Interviews, selects, hires, and retains employees
  19. Ensures orientation and training for employees
  20. Manages performance
  21. Executes progressive discipline
  22. Manages front line operations of area of accountability related to meeting/exceeding departmental goals 5 keys of excellence, DCH Mission and Vision

DCH Standards:

  • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
  • Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet.
  • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Current RN Alabama licensure is required. BCLS, ACLS and PALS is required. If certifications are not current, they must be obtained within 90 days of hire date. A minimum of two years nursing experience is required with a BSN degree preferred. Must have competence in patient care management, leadership, and computer skills necessary to support the programs utilized by the department.  Excellent communication skills and  demonstrated ability to work well with and direct a team is necessary.  Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
